چکیده

In this paper we define Performatology as a data driven, machine learning, and performance theory based approach to interactive drama through the procedural acting of Performative Embodied Agents (PEAs). PEAs are designed to serve as acting tools for live embodied performers to extend their craft into computational media, and to make agents better actors for the enhancement of cinematic games. We position Performatology as a complement to Narratology research, as cinematic games require good procedural actors to dramatically tell their stories. The design of our PEAs architecture features a Mimic module that simulates a live actor’s gesture through performer modeling, recognition, prediction, and synthesis. To model performer presence, we initially implement offline training of a genetic algorithm on mocap data to learn a dancer’s gestural signature, and then use the model for online interaction with the same performer using a Kinect camera.

A preliminary poetics for interactive drama and games

Interactive drama has been discussed for a number of years as a new AI-based interactive experience (Laurel 1986, Bates 1992). While there has been substantial technical progress in building believable agents (Bates, Loyall and Reilly 1992, Blumberg 1996, Hayes-Roth, van Gent and Huber 1996), and some technical progress in interactive plot (Weyhrauch 1997), no work has yet been completed which ...

Drama Management Evaluation for Interactive Fiction Games

A growing research community is working towards employing drama management components in interactive story-based games. These components gently guide the story towards a narrative arc that improves the player’s experience. However, the success of drama management approaches has not been evaluated using human players in a real game implementation. In this paper, we evaluate our drama management ...

MGLAIR Agents in Virtual and Other Graphical Environments

We are demonstrating several intelligent agents built according to the MGLAIR (Modal Grounded Layered Architecture with Integrated Reasoning) agent architecture. The top layer of MGLAIR is implemented in SNePS and its acting subsystem, SNeRE (the SNePS Rational Engine). The major demonstration will be act 3 of The Trial The Trail, an interactive drama running on an immersive Virtual Reality sys...

Interactive Digital Storytelling: Towards a Hybrid Conceptual Approach

In this contribution, “Interactive Digital Storytelling” is viewed as a hybrid form of game design and cinematic storytelling for the understanding and creation of future learning and entertainment applications. The result of several practical experiments in the design of interactive agents for storytelling, a formal design model is presented that provides a conceptual bridge between both tradi...

(Re)telling chess stories as game content

Procedural story generation is an active and increasingly important area of interactive entertainment. Some of the most difficult challenges with the concept are generation and managing of dramatic elements with high degree of variation that are both internally consistent and entertaining. If an authoring system could access a large repository of proven sets of domain specific dramatic action s...
